Improve Your Window Washing Safety
OSHA regulations require building owners to provide proper fall protection equipment so that commercial window washers can safely do their jobs. Unfortunately, some people don't take these federal regulations seriously, resulting in deadly accidents and injuries when it comes to window washing.
Several years ago in California, while a window washer was moving an extension cord around the corner of a building, he disconnected the lanyard on his fall protection equipment from an anchor point. As he moved toward the edge of the roof he lost his balance and fell about 130 feet -- 11 stories -- before smashing onto a moving car on the street below. He was lucky that the car broke his fall, but even so, he suffered multiple broken bones, brain trauma, was not able to walk, and could no longer work. His wife took on extra jobs and his daughter quit school to help provide for the family. Their lives completely changed in that split second. Some workers have not been as lucky.
His employer's world also changed. They were slammed with five citations and fined close to $13,000 for violations. They were cited for "failure to secure the roof with fall protection equipment and inadequate training on proper use of the victim's personal fall protection equipment."
